RECOGNIZING THE SYMPTONS OF METH ADDICTION
Meth addicts will exhibit warning signs of their drug use or addiction. According to The Partnership at Drugfree.org’s Pact 360 Meth360® Information Kit, the physical symptoms of a meth addiction include the following signs.
• Weight loss
• Abnormal sweating
• Shortness of breath
• Sores that do not heal
• Dilated pupils
• Burns on lips or fingers
• Track marks on arms
• Dental deterioration (SAMHSA, April 2011)
A meth addict will also exhibit peculiar behavioral symptoms such as the following:
• Withdrawal from family and friends
• Change in friends
• Increased activity
• Long periods of sleeplessness
• Long periods of sleep
• Incessant talking
• Irritability
• Twitching and shaking
• Decreased appetite
• Erratic attention span
• Repetitious behavior … [pulling out hair and picking at skin]
• Aggression or violent behavior
• Convulsions
• Carelessness about appearance
• Deceit or secretiveness (SAMHSA)
In addition, meth addicts will experience mental changes as well. They will become paranoid and anxious. Addicts may also become depressed and moody, have hallucinations, and feel as if insects are crawling under their skin.
PARAPHERNALIA OF A METH ADDICTION
If you suspect that a friend or family member is a meth addict or is using meth, the information kit advises you to watch for the following items that are part of the drug paraphernalia of a meth user.
• Rolled up paper money or short straws
• Pieces of glass/mirrors
• Razor blades
• Burned spoons
• Plastic tubing
• Syringes/needles (SAMHSA)
It’s important to be aware that methamphetamine imparts a heightened impression of assurance and power and a loss of inhibitions in the user. This may put the addict and surrounding people in danger.
New Beginnings has the resources to combat meth addiction, as well as services for alcohol rehab, drug rehab, and dual diagnosis rehab. Unlike most treatment centers, we provide a full continuum of services from assessment to intervention, from outpatient to residential. Our treatment approach recognizes the differences men and women face when recovering from a meth addiction or other addiction, so we address specific gender-based issues. We also offer family and specialty programs, such as corrections-based programming and stimulant-focused programs.
