ALCOHOL WITHDRAWAL TREATMENT

According to a SAMHSA article from the 2004 winter issue of Substance Abuse in Brief entitled “Treating Alcohol Problems,” “identifying risky drinking behavior, alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence can be difficult,” (SAMHSA, Winter 2004). The article states that problems associated with alcohol, such as relational, health, or personal problems may not surface right away. An alcohol addiction or problem can simmer under the surface until a major workplace incident, drunk-driving crash, or conflict with the police occurs. At that point, the situation becomes harder to ignore, and options for alcohol treatment should be discussed.

ALCOHOL TREATMENT OPTIONS

“Treating Alcohol Problems,” also states that those with mild to moderate drinking problems may benefit from a brief intervention, which should include the following steps.

• A statement from a counselor or doctor that the client is misusing alcohol.
• Screening and assessment to determine the extent of the problem.
• Recommendations on eliminating or reducing alcohol consumption.
• A plan of action with specific steps for achieving step #3.
• A summary of the intervention; schedule any necessary future appointments (SAMHSA).

Those diagnosed with an alcohol addiction or disorder will need more intensive treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, or 12-Step facilitation.
