METHAMPHETAMINE TREATMENT OPTIONS

Addition to meth is treatable and can be successful. One model that has been used to treat meth addiction is the Matrix Model. According to the November 2011 fact sheet “Methamphetamine Addiction: Progress, But Need to Remain Vigilant,”

The Matrix Model consists of a 16-week intervention that includes intensive group and individual therapy to promote the behavioral changes needed to remain abstinent, prevent relapse, and establish a lifestyle unrelated to drugs. When applied to methamphetamine abusers, the Matrix Model has been shown to significantly reduce drug use (NIDA, November 2011).

The fact sheet also states that Motivational Incentives for Enhancing Drug Abuse Recovery (MIEDAR) is another remedy that has shown promise as being an effective meth treatment. In this treatment model, meth abusers are rewarded for meeting milestones in their treatment (such as testing drug free on urine tests) with gifts, money, or points that can be used to redeem gifts or other rewards.

According to the study Motivational Incentives: From Research to Practice by Maxine L. Stitzer, Ph.D., PI, abstinence incentives were effective in treatment for stimulant addictions (such as meth addiction treatment). This study showed better retention and longer durations of abstinence while the abuser was in treatment (Stitzer, October 17, 2006).

FUTURE OF METH TREATMENT

While at the present time no medications have been approved for the use of meth treatment, NIDA is working diligently on exploring that possibility. According to the Methamphetamine Addiction fact sheet, clinical trials have either been recently completed or are underway for a few promising drugs, including the antidepressants Bupropion and Mirtazapine. The National Institute on Drug Abuse is also investigating the possibility of using a vaccine in meth treatment (NIDA).
