ALCOHOL ADDICTION AND THE WORKPLACE
Alcohol is an expensive problem for America, costing billions of dollars each year. Employers are not immune from the consequences of alcohol misuse, as they feel the effects in the workplace. Alcohol and Substance Misuse, a webpage by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, states that “Alcohol misuse is associated with high costs to employers including absenteeism, decreased productivity (due to poor work performance), turnover, accidents, and increased health care costs” (National Center, April 2011).
It’s not just full-blown alcoholism that is the cause of the problems, either. According to the SAMHSA fact sheet “Save Money By Addressing Employee Alcohol Problems,” recreational drinkers actually cause more of the problems related to workforce alcohol problems than do those with alcohol addictions.
SAMHSA cites studies by General Motors and Xerox in which the companies implemented health and wellness programs in their workplaces that promoted healthy behaviors. In both cases, the programs reduced alcohol problems and helped their businesses realize savings. The programs included elements such as confidential counseling and education (SAMHSA, n.d.).
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) have also been shown to be beneficial to workers with alcohol problems. They make use of the following tools.
• Alcohol education
• Screening for and early identification of risky behaviors involving alcohol
• Employee referrals for treatment from alcohol addiction or misuse
SAMHSA recommends that employers implement the following practices:
• A health plan that includes comprehensive benefits for substance abuse treatment. Medication, therapy and ongoing support are all viable options during alcohol recovery.
• Alcohol screening, education, and support for alcohol recovery included in company EAPs or wellness programs.
• A health plan mandate requiring physicians to evaluate patients for possible alcohol misuse or abuse.
